Fortnite Fractions & Percentages

Use the maths hiding inside your favourite games — health bars, loot tables, and V-Bucks — to master fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Section 1 · Fractions & Decimals

Reading the Health Bar

By the end of this section I can convert between fractions and decimals — so I can instantly read any health or shield bar (in-game and in real life).

1A Fractions as Part of a Whole

A fraction tells you how many pieces you have out of the total pieces. In Fortnite, your health bar is split into 100 HP — every hit is a fraction of that total.

🎮 Health Bar Fractions

numeratordenominatorsimplify

If you have 75 HP out of a maximum of 100 HP, you write that as the fraction 75/100.

To simplify: find the highest common factor (HCF) of 75 and 100, which is 25. Divide both by 25 → 3/4.

So 75 HP is three-quarters of your maximum health. 🏆

Your shield is at 40 out of 100 — write it as a simplified fraction

Write the fraction: 40/100 HP remaining over max HP
Find the HCF of 40 and 100: HCF = 20 both divide evenly by 20
Divide top and bottom by 20: 2/5 40 ÷ 20 = 2, 100 ÷ 20 = 5
Answer: 2/5 shield is two-fifths full

Your health is at 60 HP out of 100 HP. Write this as a simplified fraction.

60/100 → HCF of 60 and 100 is 20 → divide both: 60÷20 = 3, 100÷20 = 53/5

After a fierce fight, you have 25 HP left out of 100. What simplified fraction of your health remains?

25/100 → HCF is 2525÷25 = 1, 100÷25 = 41/4

1B Converting Fractions to Decimals

To turn any fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom). This lets you compare health bars even when the totals are different.

🛡️ Comparing Shield Bars

divide top ÷ bottomdecimal

Player A has 3/4 shield. Player B has 7/10 shield. Who has more?

Convert: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 and 7 ÷ 10 = 0.70. Since 0.75 > 0.70, Player A wins the shield comparison. ✅

Convert 5/8 shield to a decimal

Divide numerator by denominator: 5 ÷ 8
Set up the division: 5.000 ÷ 8 add zeros to keep dividing
8 goes into 50 six times (48), remainder 2 → 8 into 20 = 2, remainder 4 → 8 into 40 = 5
Answer: 0.625 5/8 = 0.625

Your squadmate has 3/4 of their shield left. Convert this to a decimal.

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Think: 4 × 0.75 = 3. ✓

An enemy has 2/5 health remaining. Write this as a decimal.

2 ÷ 5 = 0.4. Think: 5 × 0.4 = 2. ✓

Section 2 · Percentages & Equivalence

V-Bucks, Loot & Percentage Deals

By the end of this section I can convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages — so I can spot real discounts on games, skins, and Battle Passes.

2A Fractions → Percentages

A percentage is just a fraction with a denominator of 100. Multiply your fraction by 100 to jump straight to percent. Useful for working out how much of a loot chest you've unlocked!

🎁 Loot Table Percentages

× 100percentequivalence

A chest has a 3/20 chance of dropping a legendary weapon. To find this as a percentage: 3 ÷ 20 × 100 = 15%.

Key equivalents to memorise:

1/2 = 0.5 = 50%  |  1/4 = 0.25 = 25%  |  3/4 = 0.75 = 75%  |  1/5 = 0.2 = 20%

A skin is on sale — only 7 out of every 20 players will see the deal. What % is that?

Write as a fraction: 7/20
Divide: 7 ÷ 20 = 0.35 numerator ÷ denominator
Multiply by 100: 0.35 × 100 = 35% decimal → percent
Answer: 35% of players see the deal

A challenge reward drops for 8 out of 20 players. What percentage of players get the reward?

8/20 → 8 ÷ 20 = 0.4 → 0.4 × 100 = 40%

In a squad of 4, three players survive to the final circle. What percentage survived? (Also write the fraction and decimal!)

3/4 → 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 → 0.75 × 100 = 75%. Fraction: 3/4, Decimal: 0.75, Percentage: 75%.

2B Finding a Percentage of an Amount

When a game store offers a discount or a Battle Pass bonus, you need to find a percentage of a V-Bucks total. The method: convert % to a decimal, then multiply.

💰 V-Bucks Discount Formula

% ÷ 100× amount

To find X% of an amount: divide X by 100 to get the decimal multiplier, then multiply by the amount.

Example: 25% of 800 V-Bucks25 ÷ 100 = 0.250.25 × 800 = 200 V-Bucks.

A skin costs 1 200 V-Bucks. There's a 30% discount. How many V-Bucks do you save?

Convert discount to decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.30
Multiply by the price: 0.30 × 1200
Calculate: 360 V-Bucks saved 0.3 × 1200 = 360
Sale price: 1200 − 360 = 840 V-Bucks

You earn a 15% Battle Pass bonus on 1000 V-Bucks. How many bonus V-Bucks do you get?

15 ÷ 100 = 0.150.15 × 1000 = 150 V-Bucks bonus. 🎉

A bundle costs 800 V-Bucks and has a 30% off sale. What is the sale price?

Saving = 0.30 × 800 = 240. Sale price = 800 − 240 = 560 V-Bucks.
