Telling Time at the Stables

Read and set analog clocks to the minute, and work out time intervals on the stable's daily schedule — so you always know when the horses are fed, groomed and ridden.

Reading an analog clock to the minute

By the end of this section I can look at an analog clock and say the exact time to the nearest minute — so I can read the stable's feeding and riding schedule at a glance.

1A Parts of the analog clock

An analog clock has a round face with numbers 1 to 12 and two hands that sweep around it. The short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand.

The hour hand moves from one number to the next over a full hour. The minute hand moves all the way around the face in 60 minutes. Each big number on the face stands for 5 minutes, because 12 × 5 = 60.

Reading 2:25 on the clock

Hour hand: just past the 2 so the hour is 2
Minute hand: points at the 5 5 × 5 = 25 minutes past
Time: 2:25 hour : minutes

The minute hand points at the 7. How many minutes past the hour is that?

Each number on the clock face stands for 5 minutes — multiply by 5.
The minute hand at 7 means 7 × 5 = 35 minutes past the hour.

The hour hand is just past the 9 and the minute hand points at the 1. It is morning. What time is it?

The minute hand at 1 means 5 minutes past the hour.
Minute hand at 1 → 1 × 5 = 5 minutes. Hour just past 9, morning → 9:05 a.m.

1B Reading to the minute

Between each big number there are five small marks. Each small mark is one minute, so you can count the minutes one at a time as well as in fives. Use the tool below to practise reading the stable clock.

"Twenty-five past" means 25 minutes after the hour.
25 minutes past 8 in the morning → 8:25 a.m.

Count by fives up to the 11.
11 × 5 = 55 minutes past the hour.

2A Setting the clock

Setting a clock is the reverse of reading it. Choose the hour, then move the minute hand to the right number of minutes. Try it below — drag the long red hand around the face.

Grooming starts at quarter past ten in the morning. Write the digital time.

"Quarter past" means a quarter of an hour, which is 15 minutes.
A quarter of 60 minutes is 15. Quarter past 10 → 10:15 a.m.

Turnout ends at 4:50 p.m. The minute hand points at which number on the clock face?

Each number stands for 5 minutes — divide 50 by 5.
50 ÷ 5 = 10, so the minute hand points at the 10.

2B Time intervals at the stables

A time interval is how long something takes from start to finish. Add minutes to find an ending time, or subtract minutes to find a starting time. A number line helps you see the jump.

A riding lesson from 9:20 to 9:55

Start: 9:20 lesson begins
End: 9:55 lesson finishes
Interval: 55 − 20 = 35 minutes subtract the minute parts
On a number line: 20 → 30 → 40 → 50 → 55 jump +10, +10, +10, +5

Check yourself

Mucking out begins at 7:10 a.m. and takes 25 minutes. What time does it finish?

Add the minutes to the starting minute part: 10 + 25.
7:10 + 25 min → 10 + 25 = 35 minutes → 7:35 a.m.

A trail ride starts at 2:15 p.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m.. How many minutes long is the ride?

Count from 2:15 to 3:00 first, then add the remaining minutes.
2:15 → 3:00 is 45 minutes, plus 5 more minutes to 3:05 → 45 + 5 = 50 minutes.

Feeding ends at 6:40 p.m. and takes 15 minutes. What time did it start?

Subtract the minutes from the ending minute part: 40 − 15.
6:40 − 15 min → 40 − 15 = 25 → 6:25 p.m.
