Minecraft Multiplication Practice

Practise your times tables and stack-up big builds by multiplying block counts — the same mental maths a miner uses to plan a chest of cobblestone or a wall of planks.

Section 1 · Building in arrays

Multiply block stacks and builds

By the end of this section I can model multiplication as rows and columns of blocks, and multiply natural numbers within 10 000 — so I can total up blocks for any Minecraft build.

1A Arrays: rows of blocks

Every stack of blocks in Minecraft is a real array: rows going across and columns going up. The total block count is just rows × columns.

The array idea

factor × factor = productrows = one factorcolumns = other factor

If you place 5 rows of 6 blocks, that is 5 × 6 = 30 blocks. Swap them and the product is the same: 6 × 5 = 30. That is the commutative property — order does not change the total.

Placing a floor of planks

Build an array: 7 rows × 4 blocks each row is a strip of 4 planks
Count in chunks: 7 × 4 = 7 × (2 + 2) split the 4 to use a fact you know
= 14 + 14 = 28 planks double a known fact

Check yourself

A double chest holds 9 stacks of cobblestone, and each stack is 64 blocks. How many blocks altogether? 9 × 64 = ?

Split the 64 into 60 + 4, then multiply each part by 9.
9 × 64 = 9 × (60 + 4) = 540 + 36 = 576 blocks.

You smelt 6 stacks of iron ingots. Each stack is 60 ingots. How many ingots is that? 6 × 60 = ?

Use the fact 6 × 6, then put the zero back on the end.
6 × 60 = 6 × 6 × 10 = 36 × 10 = 360 ingots.

1B Bigger builds within 10 000

For a large build you often multiply a 2-digit number by another. Split one number into tens and ones, multiply each part, then add. Keep totals under 10 000 — that is the range we are working in this year.

A wall of stone bricks

Wall: 8 blocks high × 24 blocks long find 8 × 24
Split 24: 8 × (20 + 4) tens and ones
= 160 + 32 = 192 blocks add the parts

Check yourself

A beacon pyramid needs a tower 13 layers high, with 8 blocks in each layer. How many blocks? 13 × 8 = ?

Split 13 into 10 + 3 and multiply each part by 8.
13 × 8 = (10 + 3) × 8 = 80 + 24 = 104 blocks.

A redstone tower has 7 floors. Each floor uses 24 blocks of redstone. How many blocks of redstone in total? 7 × 24 = ?

Split 24 into 20 + 4, then multiply each part by 7.
7 × 24 = 7 × (20 + 4) = 140 + 28 = 168 blocks.

Check yourself

A villager trades 12 emeralds per customer and serves 6 customers. How many emeralds? 12 × 6 = ?

Think 10 × 6 and 2 × 6, then add.
12 × 6 = (10 + 2) × 6 = 60 + 12 = 72 emeralds.

A Nether farm produces 7 rows of 15 wart blocks each. How many wart blocks? 7 × 15 = ?

Split 15 into 10 + 5 and multiply each part by 7.
7 × 15 = 7 × (10 + 5) = 70 + 35 = 105 blocks.
