Equivalent Fractions with Minecraft Crafting Recipes

Use the 3×3 crafting grid to see how the same portion can be written as different fractions — and prove when two recipes are really the same.

Fractions on the Crafting Grid

By the end of this section I can name a fraction shown on a 3×3 crafting grid — so I can read any recipe as a fraction of the whole bench.

1A Reading a recipe as a fraction

A Minecraft crafting bench is a 3 × 3 grid — exactly 9 cells. Whatever you place on the bench is a fraction of those 9 cells.

The two parts of a fraction

denominator — bottom, how many equal parts the whole bench hasnumerator — top, how many parts are filled

On a full crafting bench the denominator is always 9, because there are 9 equal cells. If you fill 4 of them, the recipe uses 4/9 of the bench.

Grid: 3 × 3 = 9 cells the whole bench
Filled: 6 cells count the squares holding items
Fraction: 6/9 6 out of 9 equal parts
Simplify: 6 ÷ 3 = 2, 9 ÷ 3 = 3 → 2/3 divide top and bottom by 3

Start with 3 out of 9, then divide both numbers by 3.
3 cells filled out of 9 → 3/9. Divide top and bottom by 3: 3 ÷ 3 = 1, 9 ÷ 3 = 3, so simplest form is 1/3.

A recipe fills 6 cells. Write the fraction of the bench used (do not simplify): ?/9

Count the filled cells — that is the top number; the bench always has 9.
6 cells filled, 9 cells total → 6/9. (Simplest form would be 2/3, but the question asks for the bench fraction.)

1B Same portion, different grid

Sometimes you do not use the full bench. If a recipe only needs the top row (3 cells of a 3-cell strip), that is 3 cells used out of 3 — but if we view the whole bench, those same 3 cells are 3/9. Same shaded part, two names.

One column = two fractions

One column of the bench = 3 cells out of 9 total
As bench fraction: 3/9 3 out of 9 equal cells
As a row of 3: 1/3 the column is 1 out of 3 equal columns
So 3/9 = 1/3 same shaded area, two names

Two columns = 6 cells out of 9. Then divide both numbers by 3.
2 columns × 3 cells = 6 filled → 6/9. Divide top and bottom by 3: 6 ÷ 3 = 2, 9 ÷ 3 = 32/3.

Proving Two Recipes Are Equivalent

By the end of this section I can prove two fractions are equivalent by scaling or simplifying — so I can swap recipes that use the same portion.

2A Scaling up to find equivalent fractions

Two fractions are equivalent if they name the same amount. You can build an equivalent fraction by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same whole number.

The rule

multiply top and bottom by the same numberthe portion stays the same

So 1/2 × 3 = 3/6 and 1/2 × 4 = 4/8. All three fill the same share of the whole.

Scale up a recipe

Start: 1/4 one cell filled out of 4
Multiply by 2: 2/8 1×2 and 4×2
Multiply by 3: 3/12 1×3 and 4×3
So 1/4 = 2/8 = 3/12 all equivalent

Multiply both the top and bottom by 2.
3 × 2 = 6 and 4 × 2 = 8, so 3/4 = 6/8.

Scale 2/3 up by 2. Write the equivalent fraction: ?/6

Multiply top and bottom by the same number — 2.
2 × 2 = 4 and 3 × 2 = 6, so 2/3 = 4/6.

2B Simplifying to prove equivalence

Scaling down (simplifying) is the reverse: divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. If two fractions both simplify to the same simplest form, they are equivalent.

Are these recipes the same?

Recipe A: 6/9 6 cells of a 9-cell bench
Recipe B: 2/3 2 columns of 3
Simplify A: 6 ÷ 3 = 2, 9 ÷ 3 = 3 → 2/3 divide top and bottom by 3
B is already 2/3 simplest form
Same simplest form → 6/9 = 2/3 equivalent ✓

Divide both numbers by 4.
4 ÷ 4 = 1, 8 ÷ 4 = 21/2.

Simplify 8/12 to its simplest form: ?/?

Both 8 and 12 divide by 4.
