On 14 July 2026, Anthropic announced Claude for Teachers: a free year of premium Claude access for verified K–12 educators in the United States, bundled with a library of teaching skills, connections to evidence-based curricula, and academic standards for all 50 US states. It is a big move in the race between AI companies to win over classrooms, and if you teach anywhere in the world you will be hearing about it. Here is what it actually includes, who can use it, and what it means if you teach in Australia.

The quick answer: Claude for Teachers is a general AI assistant with teaching tools bolted on, free for a year for US K–12 teachers who verify their status and sign up by 30 June 2027. It is US-only and grounded in US state standards. It is not available to Australian teachers, and it does not know the Australian Curriculum, the Victorian Curriculum or the NSW syllabuses as first-class frameworks.

What Claude for Teachers includes

Claude for Teachers is built on Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, with a set of education-specific additions:

• A free year of premium Claude. Verified US K–12 educators get complimentary access to Claude’s paid capabilities for a full year, with sign-ups open until 30 June 2027.
• Learning Commons integration. Claude can reference academic standards across all 50 US states, along with the learning competencies underneath them and typical progression sequences, so lesson plans it drafts can be mapped to a state standard.
• A library of teaching skills. Pre-built workflows for lesson planning, differentiation, analysing class data and scheduling tasks, co-developed with Learning Commons.
• Evidence-based curricula. Connections to trusted curriculum resources such as OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics (IM v.360).
• Claude Code and Cowork. Teachers can hand Claude a folder of class data (rosters, diagnostics, attendance, notes) and have it build a picture of where each student is, or set it to review exit tickets on a schedule.

On privacy, Anthropic says data shared by teachers is not used for model training, student information is covered by a K–12 Data Processing Addendum that complies with FERPA (the US student-privacy law), and the company is working with the American Federation of Teachers on protections.

Who can use it

Eligibility is narrow and worth being clear about, because most coverage glosses over it:

• You must be a verified K–12 educator.
• You must be in the United States.
• It is currently for individual teachers only - a dedicated school and district offering is “forthcoming”.
• The free year requires signing up by 30 June 2027.

If you tick all of those boxes, it is a genuinely generous offer and worth taking. Anthropic is competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers, Microsoft Elevate and Google’s education push, and teachers are the beneficiaries of that competition, at least on price.

What it means for Australian teachers

Not much, directly - and that is the part the headlines skip. Claude for Teachers is not available in Australia, and its curriculum grounding is built around US state standards, not the frameworks Australian teachers are accountable to.
