1B Fact families: every move has a counter

Every multiplication fact comes with a division partner. If you know 6 × 4 = 24, you also know 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Recognising the family lets you switch between moves instantly.

Fact family from one move

Start: 7 × 3 = 21 your known multiplication
Flip: 3 × 7 = 21 order doesn't change the product
Divide: 21 ÷ 7 = 3 same three numbers, new question
Divide: 21 ÷ 3 = 7 the second partner

Your move needs 6 × 7 charged. What is the product?

Think of it as 6 sevens — count up by 7s if the product doesn't come straight away.
You can build it: 6 × 5 = 30 (a fact you likely know), then add two more sevens: 30 + 7 + 7 = 44... that gives 42. Or: 7 × 6 = 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42.

You charged 8 × 4 = 32. What is 32 ÷ 8?

This is the division partner of the fact you just used — the answer is the other factor.
The fact family is 8 × 4 = 32, 4 × 8 = 32, 32 ÷ 8 = 4, 32 ÷ 4 = 8. So 32 ÷ 8 = 4.

2A Build tricky facts from easy ones

You don't need to memorise every fact from scratch. Use doubling and one more group to construct the ones that feel sticky.

Strategy: Double it

×6 = double ×3×8 = double ×4

Because 6 = 2 × 3, you can find 6 × n by working out 3 × n and doubling. Same idea for ×8: 8 = 2 × 4, so double the ×4 fact.

Build 6 × 7

Known: 3 × 7 = 21 a ×3 fact you already have
Double: 21 × 2 = 42 because 6 = 2 × 3
So: 6 × 7 = 42 your tricky fact, solved

Build 8 × 6

Known: 4 × 6 = 24 a ×4 fact you already have
Double: 24 × 2 = 48 because 8 = 2 × 4
So: 8 × 6 = 48 tricky ×8 fact, solved

Strategy: One more group

For ×7, jump from a fact you know and add one more group. 7 × n = 6 × n + n or 5 × n + 2n.

Example: 7 × 8 → start from 5 × 8 = 40, then add two more eights: 40 + 16 = 56.

Check yourself

Use doubling: first find 3 × 6, then double it. What is 6 × 6?

Work out the ×3 version first, then double that result.
3 × 6 = 18. Because 6 = 2 × 3, double it: 18 × 2 = 36. So 6 × 6 = 36.

Use "one more group": start from 6 × 8 = 48 and add one more group of 8. What is 7 × 8?

Take the ×6 result and add one more group of the second number.
6 × 8 = 48. Add one more group of 8: 48 + 8 = 56. So 7 × 8 = 56.

Use doubling: first find 4 × 8, then double it. What is 8 × 8?

Find the ×4 fact first, then double that product because 8 is double 4.
4 × 8 = 32. Because 8 = 2 × 4, double it: 32 × 2 = 64. So 8 × 8 = 64.
