Grade 3 science is 18 NGSS standards, and not one of them contains the word “know”. They start with verbs instead: represent data, construct an argument, develop models, plan and conduct an investigation, make a claim about the merit of a design solution. NGSS standards are called performance expectations because that is literally what they are: things a child does, not things a child knows.
That single fact changes how you plan the year. You cannot satisfy a grade 3 science standard by reading a chapter and answering the questions at the end, however good the chapter is. The standard was not written that way.
The year runs about 60 to 90 hours at home, roughly 45 minutes twice a week, and it works far better in longer blocks than in daily slices.
The 18 standards
Fifteen carry a grade 3 label. Three more are engineering design standards coded 3-5-ETS1, which sit on the whole grades 3 to 5 band rather than on any single year. They are part of grade 3 and they are easy to miss, because a search for “grade 3” will not return them.

Notice what grade 3 spends its weight on: evolution and forces, four standards each. Together with heredity, that is ten of the eighteen concerned with how traits pass on, vary, and help or hinder survival. Grade 3 is a biology-heavy year wearing a general-science label.
The three hard ones
3-LS4-2 and 3-LS4-3, variation and survival
Use evidence to construct an explanation for how variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages, and construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
The misconception: that organisms change because they need to. It is the oldest misconception in biology and children arrive with it fully formed, usually from cartoons.
The wrong answer it produces: “The giraffe stretched its neck to reach the leaves, so its babies had long necks.” Or, in the version that turns up more often at eight, “the rabbits turned white so the fox could not see them.” The child has the survival idea and has attached it to the wrong mechanism: the animal is doing the changing, on purpose.
The reteach: always start with the variation already existing. Some rabbits were paler before it snowed. Ask which ones the fox catches, then ask who has babies. Never let the sequence run the other way. The word to avoid entirely is “adapt” as a verb applied to an individual animal, because it invites exactly this error.
3-PS2-1, balanced and unbalanced forces
Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
The misconception: that motion requires a continuous force. This is the intuitive physics every human is born with and it takes deliberate work to dislodge.
The wrong answer it produces: ask why a rolling ball stops and the child says “it ran out of force” or “it used up its energy”. The idea that something had to actively stop it, and that the something is friction, is genuinely counter-intuitive at eight.
The reteach: reduce the friction and let them watch. The same ball on carpet, on a wooden floor, and on ice or a very smooth surface. Ask what is different, not what is happening. The investigation is also the standard, since 3-PS2-1 asks the child to plan and conduct it rather than to be told the answer.
3-LS3-2, traits influenced by the environment
Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
The misconception: that everything about an organism is inherited. It is the opposite error to the one above, and grade 3 asks children to hold both ideas at once, which is genuinely hard.
The wrong answer it produces: asked why one plant of the same kind is smaller than another, the child says “its parent plant was small” and stops. Light, water and space do not occur to them, because the previous standard just taught them that traits come from parents.
The reteach: grow two plants from the same packet in different conditions. Same parents, different outcome, in front of them. It takes three weeks of doing nothing and it settles the point permanently.
Do not miss the engineering standards
The three 3-5-ETS1 standards apply across grades 3, 4 and 5 rather than to one year, so they are filed under the band and not under any grade. Practically, that means:
- They will not turn up if you search by grade. This is the most common way a homeschool year silently omits engineering design.
- They can be met once well, rather than three times thinly. One real design project across the band, revisited, satisfies them better than a token activity each year.
- Grade 3 already has an engineering standard of its own (3-PS2-4, define a simple design problem solved with magnets), and 3-ESS3-1 asks for a claim about the merit of a design solution. Pair those with the band standards and one project covers a lot of ground.
How long this actually takes at home
About 60 to 90 hours, which sounds low next to math or English and is not, because NGSS science is done rather than read. Two 45-minute blocks a week beats 20 minutes daily: an investigation that has to be packed away halfway through is not an investigation.
- Investigations and building: about half. Nine of the eighteen standards require the child to plan, conduct, develop, test or design something.
- Reading and discussion: about a third. Including the argument standards, which are talk before they are writing.
- Recording and explaining fills the rest.
What to cut when it runs long. 3-ESS2-2 (climates in different regions) is mostly research and compresses well. Do not cut the forces investigations or the plant-growing, because those are the standards that cannot be met any other way.
Readiness check
- Can they record an observation? Not neatly. Just a drawing plus a few words about what they saw. Several standards ask for data to be represented.
- Can they answer “how do you know?” Four standards use the word evidence. If “because I think so” is the habit, start there.
- Reading level for informational text. Grade 3 science reading is dense. Reading it aloud is entirely legitimate and keeps the science from becoming a reading test.
A sequence for a flexible year
- Forces and motion (3-PS2-1 to 3-PS2-4). Hands-on, immediately engaging, and the magnet standard leads naturally into design work.
- The engineering design band (3-5-ETS1-1 to 3), started here as one real project and returned to.
- Life cycles (3-LS1-1), which is a model-building standard and works well with something alive in the house.
- Inheritance and variation (3-LS3-1), then environmental influence (3-LS3-2), in that order, with the plants started early because they take weeks.
- Survival and variation (3-LS4-2, 3-LS4-3), built on the heredity work.
- Fossils (3-LS4-1) and habitat change (3-LS4-4), which close the evolution strand.
- Group behavior (3-LS2-1), a short argument standard.
- Weather data (3-ESS2-1), which is a term-long background task: record it daily, graph it at the end.
- Climate and regions (3-ESS2-2) and weather hazards (3-ESS3-1), the research and design-claim pair.
The split-grade case
Science splits differently from math and English, and mostly it does not split at all. NGSS performance expectations are about doing, so a child who reads two years behind can do every grade 3 investigation, as long as the reading is not the gate.
- Read the science aloud. It removes the only real barrier, and none of the standards say the child has to read the material themselves.
- Writing is the other false gate. “Construct an argument” can be spoken. Several of these standards are met in conversation and lost on paper.
- Multi-age works better here than anywhere. Because the ETS standards are banded across grades 3 to 5, siblings in different years can genuinely do the same project.
Evidence and records for this grade
Grade 3 is a testing year in Pennsylvania and Oregon, but both test reading and math rather than science, so nothing external will look at this.

- Photos of investigations and builds, dated. Most of this year does not survive as paper, and a folder of worksheets misrepresents it.
- The weather data table and graph, which is one of the few genuinely paper-shaped artifacts in grade 3 science.

The honest summary
Eighteen standards, about 75 hours, and every one of them a verb. Grade 3 science is not a reading subject and it cannot be covered by a textbook chapter, because the standards ask the child to plan, build, argue and model rather than to know.
Watch for the two opposite misconceptions running side by side: animals changing themselves on purpose, and everything being inherited. Grade 3 teaches both halves and children reliably grab one and drop the other. And do not lose the three engineering standards to the band filing, because searching by grade will never show them to you.
