Teaching Maths Through What Students Love: From Football to Baking

Few sentences shut a child down faster than “get out your maths book.” Not because the maths is too hard, but because it arrives stripped of any reason to care. A column of decontextualised sums says, in effect, do this because I said so. The same decimals wrapped around a football ladder, a baking recipe, or the loot in a video game say something completely different: here is a thing you already care about, and maths is how you get more of it.

Maths is the subject where relevance pays off most visibly, because almost everything a child loves is quietly full of it.

The maths is already in the interest

You do not have to bolt maths onto a child’s passions. It is already there. Football is a running tutorial in averages, percentages, and probability - win rates, goal differences, the odds of a comeback. Baking is ratios and fractions you can eat: double the recipe, halve it, convert cups to grams. Video games are economies of resources, rates, and trade-offs. The question is never “how do I make this child like maths?” It is “where is the maths in what this child already likes?” - and the answer is almost always “everywhere.”

Why the framing matters more than the difficulty

A student who insists they are “bad at maths” will often calculate a goal difference or a damage-per-second figure without blinking - the same arithmetic they claim to be unable to do. The skill was never the obstacle. The framing was. When the numbers attach to something meaningful, the working memory has a place to put them, mistakes feel worth fixing, and effort stops feeling like a punishment.

What this looks like in practice

  • Start from the interest, not the topic. Pick the passion first, then find the curriculum concept living inside it.
  • Use real numbers from the student’s world - actual scores, actual recipe quantities, actual in-game prices - so the maths feels true rather than invented.
  • Let the problem have a point. “Will the team make the finals?” beats “solve for x” even when the underlying maths is identical.
  • Move from the concrete interest toward the abstract rule, not the other way around. The rule sticks once the student has seen it work somewhere they care about.
