Free Tutoring Assessments in Tarneit and Werribee: What They Tell You

Nearly every tutoring centre in Tarneit, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing opens the same way: book a free assessment. It is a useful hour. It is also one sitting on one afternoon, run by the business that will then quote you, and most centres do not say what you take home from it. This page sets out what each local assessment actually is, what they cost afterwards where a price is published, and how to walk in already knowing the answer to the question the assessment asks.

We build Sprout Tutor, which is free while it is in beta, so this is an interested comparison. Every centre fact below is from the centre’s own page, read on 9 October 2026, and every Sprout Tutor claim is a rule we checked in our own code the same day.

A hand-drawn map of Greater Melbourne on a postcard, with Tarneit circled west of the CBD near Werribee. A note reads Wyndham, 337,009 people and growing. A tilted photo shows the Sprout Tutor subject picker: English at Year 5 and Mathematics at Year 4, both Victorian Curriculum 2.0.
Tarneit is about 25 km west of the city, in one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country.

Why Wyndham has so many tutoring centres

Wyndham City says it is “one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia”, with 337,009 people in 2024. The schools are being built to keep up: the Victorian School Building Authority lists seven new Wyndham schools opened in 2024 alone, including Brinbeal Secondary College and Wimba Primary in Tarneit, Barayip Primary in Tarneit in 2025, and Mindalk Primary in Truganina in 2026. Suzanne Cory High School, one of Victoria’s four selective entry schools, is in Werribee.

Young families, new schools and a selective school down the road: the tutoring centres followed. Within a few kilometres of Tarneit there are franchise centres (Kip McGrath, Success Tutoring) and local operators (Lynn’s Learning in Wyndham Vale, RHZ in Truganina, Brainworks in Tarneit). Almost all of them lead with the same offer.

What the free assessment actually is, centre by centre

  • Kip McGrath (239 Hogans Rd, Hoppers Crossing, listed as its Tarneit centre; and Synnot St, Werribee). Its assessment page says it takes “40 - 60 minutes”, is “conducted by a fully qualified teacher”, uses “a combination of computer based and written tasks”, and is followed by a talk with the teacher about the results. It also says recommendations “will only be made if your child needs it”. No written report is mentioned.
  • Success Tutoring (Watton St, Werribee; Tallis Cct, Truganina). Its pages offer a “One-on-one Diagnostic English & Math assessment” and a “comprehensive initial assessment”. Length, format and what the parent receives are not stated; the booking button leads to an app.
  • Lynn’s Learning (Wyndham Vale) describes “half an hour with your child, in person”, a short level check and a one-to-one chat with the parent.
  • RHZ Tutoring (Truganina) runs an online Skills Check of 10 to 15 minutes, “pitched at the top of their year level”, and promises “a topic-by-topic report the same day”. It is the only local service we found that names a written report.

So the honest description is: a 15 to 60 minute snapshot, usually with a conversation, usually without a document. That is not a criticism of the people running them. A good teacher learns a great deal from watching a child work for forty minutes. It is a description of what one sitting can and cannot be.

What happens after it: the prices

The assessment is free. Here is what each centre publishes about the next step:

CentrePublished priceAbout 40 weeks a year
Kip McGrathRRP $78 a session, “prices may vary by location”$3,120 weekly
Lynn’s Learning$40 a week all-inclusive, plus a $40 enrolment fee$1,640
Success TutoringNone. “For current pricing, please refer to our app.”Ask
RHZ, BrainworksNone on the pageAsk
Sprout TutorFree on every plan while in beta. Not on the pricing page.$0

Those are advertised figures, not quotes. What Melbourne tutoring costs has the wider ranges.

A snapshot, against a record

Here is the problem with any one-sitting test, and it is not ours to make: the people who run NAPLAN make it about their own test. The 2026 parent information for NAPLAN reports says results reflect “performance on the day of testing, rather than being a full measure of their overall learning”, and that a test held once every two years “cannot replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers”.

A tutoring centre’s assessment has the same limit, more sharply. A tired Thursday, a nervous child in a new room, one fraction question that happened to be the wrong one: the snapshot records all of it as ability.

A record does not have that problem. Ten questions a day for three school weeks is 150 marked answers, spread over fifteen afternoons, on the topics the Victorian Curriculum sets for your child’s Year. That is what Sprout Tutor builds:

  • It starts at the Year you set, per subject. Maths can be practised at Year 4 while English stays at Year 5. Three right in a row moves your child up a tier and five wrong moves them down; three right at the hardest tier climbs the working Year, and five wrong at the easiest drops it. Every Year change is logged with a date. The rules in full.
  • It names the gap with a code. A needs-a-hand list ranks up to eight Victorian Curriculum codes by wrong answers. Not “she struggles with fractions”, but which fractions content description, and how many times.
  • It shows you the evidence. The parent dashboard shows the literal question, the options, the answer your child gave, and whether a hint was opened or the answer revealed. What the dashboard shows.
Two rows. The first, a free assessment, is one block on one afternoon: 15 to 60 minutes, one sitting, a conversation, usually no document. The second is fifteen small blocks across three school weeks, ten marked questions each, 150 answers, with the wrong ones grouped by curriculum code. A line below says a snapshot tells you where to look and a record tells you what is wrong.
Run the record first, then take it to the assessment. The teacher’s forty minutes go further when they start from 150 answers.

Before you book a free assessment, give your child a PIN and ten questions a day for three weeks, then bring the needs-a-hand list with you. Start free. Sprout Tutor is free on every plan while it is in beta.

What the centre does better

Stated plainly, because a comparison that cannot do this is not worth reading.

  • A person watches the child work. At Kip McGrath that is a qualified teacher for up to an hour. They see working-out, hesitation and confidence, which no list of right and wrong answers captures.
  • Reading aloud and writing need a person. Our questions are marked automatically, which means a typed or chosen answer. A centre can judge a paragraph and listen to a child read.
  • You get a conversation. You can bring the school report or a NAPLAN result and hear a plan explained by someone who has just watched your child.
  • A room on a fixed afternoon gets done. Practice at home depends on the household, and that is not always easy. Kip McGrath also offers makeup lessons.

And the limit on our side: the effectiveness of personalised-learning software like ours has not been independently established, and very few rigorous studies of it exist.

Ask the school first: it may already run small groups

Victorian government schools have a small group learning policy (updated December 2025) for students performing significantly below their age-expected standard in literacy or numeracy: groups of up to five with one teacher. If your child’s report shows them below expected level, ask the classroom teacher what the school runs before you pay anyone. It costs nothing to ask, and the school already has a year of evidence on your child.

Five questions to ask at any free assessment

  1. “What will I take home in writing?” A topic list, a Level, a score? If the answer is “we’ll talk it through”, take notes.
  2. “Which Victorian Curriculum Level, and which strand?” Tarneit schools report against the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Check what the centre teaches to: one provider’s local pages we read named the Victorian, the NSW and the Australian Curriculum on different pages.
  3. “How many children per tutor, and for how long?” None of the franchise pages we read publishes a group size or a session length.
  4. “What does a term cost, and how do I stop?” Several centres advertise “no lock-in”. Ask how much notice ending it takes, in writing. Consumer Affairs Victoria explains when a contract term that penalises only one side for ending it may be unfair.
  5. “Will the tutor read this list before each session?” Hand over the needs-a-hand list. A centre that uses it is one whose forty minutes start from evidence.

The short version

Tutoring centres across Tarneit, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Truganina all start with a free assessment: 40 to 60 minutes with a teacher at Kip McGrath, half an hour at Lynn’s Learning, 10 to 15 minutes online at RHZ, unstated at Success Tutoring. It is one sitting, often without a document, and it comes before a quote: RRP $78 a session at Kip McGrath, $40 a week at Lynn’s, unpublished elsewhere. Sprout Tutor builds the alternative for free while in beta: 150 marked answers over three weeks, a needs-a-hand list by Victorian Curriculum code, and the literal questions on a dashboard.

Run the record. Then book the assessment, and hand it over. Start free; Sprout Tutor is in public beta for Years 1 to 10 on the Victorian Curriculum. If the selective entry exam is the reason you are looking, what ACER says about coaching is worth reading first.

Checked 9 October 2026. Centre facts and prices are from Kip McGrath’s assessment, pricing, Tarneit and Werribee pages, Success Tutoring’s Tarneit, Werribee and Truganina pages, Lynn’s Learning’s Tarneit page, RHZ Tutoring’s Tarneit page and Brainworks’ Tarneit page; they are advertised figures, not quotes. Population is from Wyndham City’s 2024-25 annual report news release; new schools are from the Victorian School Building Authority’s list, updated 8 September 2026; selective entry facts are from vic.gov.au. NAPLAN quotes are from the 2026 individual student report parent information. The small group policy is from the Department of Education’s Policy and Advisory Library. Sprout Tutor claims were checked against our own code the same day. We build competing software and say so above.

FAQ

What happens at a free tutoring assessment?

It varies by centre. Kip McGrath says its assessment takes 40 to 60 minutes, is run by a qualified teacher with computer-based and written tasks, and is followed by a talk with the teacher; no written report is mentioned. Lynn's Learning describes half an hour in person plus a chat with the parent. RHZ Tutoring runs a 10 to 15 minute online check with a same-day topic report. Success Tutoring does not say how long its diagnostic takes or what the parent receives.

How much does tutoring cost in Tarneit and Werribee?

Kip McGrath publishes a recommended price of $78 a session that may vary by location, about $3,120 for 40 weeks. Lynn's Learning in Wyndham Vale publishes $40 a week plus a $40 enrolment fee. Success Tutoring, RHZ and Brainworks publish no price on their local pages. These are advertised figures read on 9 October 2026, not quotes.

Is a free tutoring assessment accurate?

It is a useful snapshot from a person watching your child work, but it is one sitting. Even NAPLAN's own parent information says a single test reflects performance on the day rather than overall learning and cannot replace ongoing assessment. A tired afternoon or a nervous child in a new room shows up as ability. Bring a longer record, such as three weeks of marked practice, so the assessment starts from evidence.

Does my child's school offer free small group tutoring?

Victorian government schools have a small group learning policy, updated December 2025, for students performing significantly below their age-expected standard in literacy or numeracy, in groups of up to five with one teacher. Ask your child's classroom teacher what the school runs before paying for tutoring.

What can I do before booking a tutoring assessment?

Run three weeks of free practice on the school's content. Sprout Tutor gives about ten questions a topic on the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 for Years 1 to 10, starting at the Year you set, and ranks up to eight curriculum codes by wrong answers on the parent dashboard, with the literal questions. Ten a day for fifteen school days is 150 marked answers. It is in public beta and free on every plan while in beta.
