My Child Is Behind in Math: Twenty Minutes a Night

Twenty minutes a night genuinely closes a math gap. It will not close one if you spend it on tonight’s homework. That is the whole thing, and it is why most honest, consistent, well-meant catch-up efforts produce so little: the homework is built on the missing piece, so working on it means running the same collapse every evening.

A child who is behind is not behind at everything. They are behind at one or two specific things, underneath, and everything above those is failing for a borrowed reason. Find the low rung and the twenty minutes starts working almost immediately.

Why homework is the wrong twenty minutes

Homework is the visible problem, it arrives with a deadline, and helping with it feels like exactly what a responsible parent should do. That is why almost everybody starts there.

But consider what tonight’s page actually is. If a grade 6 child cannot divide fractions, the homework is not testing fraction division: it is a page of ratio problems that quietly require it. You can help them through tonight’s page and change nothing, because you did the missing step for them. Tomorrow the same gap arrives wearing different clothes.

Two things follow, and they are worth accepting before you start:

  • You are going to work below grade level for a while, and that is the treatment rather than a concession. Time spent at the level of the gap is the only time that compounds.
  • The homework may get worse before it gets better. If you are no longer walking them through it, more of it comes back wrong. That is not a regression, it is the first honest measurement you have had.

Finding the low rung, in one sitting

You are looking for the deepest thing that is broken, so work backwards and stop at the first thing they can do confidently. Ten questions, no time limit, no help, and stop the moment two in a row are solid.

Ask them out loud, not on a worksheet, because you want to hear the reasoning rather than mark the answer. Start one grade below where they are, and keep stepping down.

Most children break in exactly one or two places on that list, and it is usually further down than the parent expected. That is normal and it is good news, because the lower the rung, the faster the repair and the more it fixes at once.

What the twenty minutes actually contains

Split it. The proportions matter more than the total.

  • Ten minutes on the gap. One thing, worked properly, with materials where materials help. Not a worksheet on the topic, the actual repair: counters, a number line, a hundred-square. This is where the ground gets rebuilt.
  • Eight minutes on fluency. Number facts, and later decimal arithmetic. Short, daily, and deliberately boring. This is the part everyone skips and it is the part that makes everything else cheaper, because a child spending working memory on 7 times 8 has none left for the problem it sits inside.
  • Two minutes on something they are good at. Ending on a win is not sentimentality. A child who is behind in math has usually decided they are bad at math, and that belief does more damage over a year than the gap does.

A note on the fluency half that is worth knowing. In the US standards, the word fluently appears from kindergarten through grade 6 and then stops: grade 4 is addition and subtraction, grade 5 is multiplication, grade 6 is division and decimals. From grade 7 onwards, arithmetic is simply assumed, and no later standard will ever flag a child who is still slow at it. If your child is past grade 6, nobody is going to raise this with you, which is precisely why it is worth eight minutes a night.

How long it takes, honestly

Twenty minutes a night, five nights a week, is about 85 hours a year. For comparison, a full year of grade 5 math taught at home runs somewhere around 170 to 200 hours, so you are adding roughly half a year of instruction annually.

What that means in practice:

  • A single specific misconception: one to three weeks. The three linked above are genuinely this fast, because nothing is missing except an idea.
  • A missing fluency: a term. There is no shortcut and there is no understanding to install, only repetition, which is why it has to be daily and short rather than weekly and long.
  • A full year behind: plan on a year to close it, while the current year also continues. That is what the arithmetic above says, and any promise of faster is worth distrusting.

The first visible change usually is not a test score. It is that they stop guessing. A child who starts saying “wait, let me think” instead of producing an instant wrong answer has already turned the corner, and that often shows up in the second or third week.

Three questions to check you are on the right twenty minutes

  1. “Can they explain why, not just do it?”

    If they get answers right but cannot explain: you have taught a procedure over a gap rather than closed it. It will hold for about six weeks and then fail again somewhere new. Go back and use materials.

  2. “Does it survive a week off?”

    If it vanishes over a holiday: it was memorized rather than understood. Not a disaster, and the fix is the same as above. Re-test anything you fixed two weeks later, always, because the gap between fixed and fixed-for-good is where catch-up efforts quietly fail.

  3. “Is the homework getting easier, or just getting done?”

    If it is only getting done: you are still doing the missing step for them. The test is whether they need you less this month than last month, not whether the page is complete.

When twenty minutes a night is not the answer

Worth saying plainly, because a page like this can imply that consistency alone fixes everything.

  • If the low rung is place value and the child is in middle school, that is more than twenty minutes of work and it deserves a proper block of time rather than an evening slot.
  • If they can do it with you and never alone, the issue may be anxiety rather than knowledge, and more practice makes anxiety worse rather than better.
  • If nothing on the ladder above is broken but the results are still poor, the problem is probably not math. Reading the question, working memory, or attention are all worth ruling in or out before another six months of arithmetic.

The short version

Do not spend the twenty minutes on tonight’s homework. Walk backwards down the ladder until you find the lowest thing that is genuinely broken, which is usually lower than you expect, and work there.

Ten minutes on the gap with real materials, eight on fluency because nothing after grade 6 will ever ask for it again, and two on something they can already do. Re-test anything you fixed two weeks later. Expect three weeks for a misconception, a term for a fluency, and a year for a year.
