A scope and sequence is two documents that got stapled together. Scope is the list of what gets covered. Sequence is the order it happens in. Curriculum publishers sell them as one thing, which is why they are so hard to adapt: the scope half is genuinely useful to you and the sequence half was written for a building you do not teach in.
Separate them and the job gets much smaller. The scope you can take from a published standards set in an afternoon, for free. The sequence you write yourself, and it should look nothing like a school calendar.
Why the school version does not transfer
A school scope and sequence is an answer to constraints. Three of them, and none of the three are yours.
- 180 days, fixed. A teacher cannot run long, because the year ends whether the class understood fractions or not. Every unit is boxed to a number of weeks decided before anyone met the children. You have no such wall.
- Twenty-five children moving together. The sequence is built so a whole class can be in the same place on the same day, which is the single largest constraint on a school plan and does not exist for you at all.
- The teacher probably cannot come back. A topic taught in October will not be revisited in March, so it has to be taught to completion in October. You can leave a thing half-built and come back to it in six weeks, and often should.
Strip those three constraints out and a school sequence loses most of its logic. What is left is the parts that come from the subject itself: place value before decimals, decoding before fluency, particles before chemical change. That residue is the real sequence, and it is much shorter and much more flexible than the document it came out of.
What a homeschool scope and sequence actually needs
Five columns. Not a calendar, not a day-by-day plan, and it fits on one page per subject per year.

Notice what is not there: dates. No week numbers, no term boundaries, no “October”. The moment a date goes into this document it becomes a thing you are behind on, and being behind a calendar you invented is the most common reason people abandon a plan that was working.
How to build one in an afternoon
- Pick the standards set you will actually use. In most of the United States that is your state’s standards, which are Common Core or a close relative for math and English, and NGSS or a relative for science. You do not have to like them to use them as a checklist, and using a public one means the list is complete and someone else maintains it.
- Copy the strand names and counts. Grade 6 math is five domains and 29 standards. Grade 5 science is 16. Grade 4 English is 43. Getting the real numbers down first stops the plan from quietly omitting a whole strand, which is the most common failure and the hardest to notice.
- Mark the band-level standards. Some standards are filed under a range rather than a grade and a grade search will never return them. NGSS engineering design is the textbook case: the three 3-5-ETS1 standards apply to grades 3, 4 and 5 and appear under none of them. If your list for grade 5 science has 13 items rather than 16, this is why.
- Fill the prerequisite column, and only that column, for ordering. Go through and ask one question per row: is there something that has to be secure before this? Most rows get nothing. The handful that do are your sequence, and they are usually five or six constraints in a year, not thirty.
- Write the evidence column before you teach anything. One line per thread: the dated work sample, the photograph, the piece of writing. Deciding this in advance costs about twenty minutes and saves the reconstruction that everyone who files a portfolio does in a panic.
That is the whole method. The output is one page per subject, and it will be more useful than any purchased scope and sequence because it contains your prerequisites and your evidence decisions rather than a stranger’s week numbers.
The number nobody publishes: how many hours a year
Every published scope and sequence talks in weeks and terms, which is useless at home because your week is not a school week. The question parents actually have is how many hours this takes. Here is what we have found writing the grade-by-grade guides, which is the same estimate each of those pages carries.

The number that surprises people is the last column. In upper elementary, the three core subjects come to roughly 400 hours a year. Spread over 160 working days that is about two and a half hours a day, and the younger grades are half of that.
A US school year is about 180 days at five and a half instructional hours, near enough a thousand hours. The difference is not that homeschooling is thin. It is that a very large part of a school day is transitions, rollcall, moving twenty-five children between rooms, and waiting for the slowest and the fastest to converge. None of that is teaching, and none of it is your job.
Two warnings about the table. These are our estimates from the standards, not measurements of your child, and a child who needs a concept rebuilt can spend a term on one thread. And the hours are not evenly distributed: in grade 5 the fraction work is a disproportionate share of the math year, and in grade 6 the ratio domain is three standards that take six to eight weeks. Plan the threads, not the hours.
When to deviate, and the rule for it
You will go off plan. The useful question is what the rule is when you do, and there is one that works: finish the thread, not the week.
If a child is halfway through fraction division and it is going badly, do not move on because the plan says so and do not grind for three more weeks because pride says so. Ask whether the prerequisite is actually secure. Usually it is not, and the fix is one row up in your own table. That is what the prerequisite column is for, and it is why it is worth filling in before you need it.
The other legitimate deviation is interest. A child who has decided this month is about volcanoes will learn more science in that month than in the three you had planned, and the standards are indifferent to the order. What is not a legitimate deviation: quietly dropping a whole strand because nobody enjoys it. Statistics, measurement and the writing standards are the usual casualties, and they are invisible when they go missing because nothing else depends on them in the short term. The scope column exists to make that visible.
The split-grade case
A homeschooled child is routinely two grades apart across subjects, and every school-shaped resource pretends otherwise. Your scope and sequence should not.
- One page per subject per child, not one per child. The moment you file by child rather than subject, a child who is grade 6 in reading and grade 4 in math becomes an argument about which grade they are “in”. They are in neither. They are at a point in two sequences.
- Look for band standards to share. Anything filed under a range rather than a grade is a genuine opportunity for siblings to work together and each meet their own requirement. The 3-5 engineering design standards are the clearest example: three children in three grades, one project, three met standards.
- Combine by subject, not by age. Science and history combine across three or four years without much loss, because reading level is not the gate. Math combines badly across even two years, because each year assumes the one before.
- Keep one family-wide slot. Arithmetic fluency practice works at any spread: everyone does ten minutes, each at their own step. It is the only part of math that combines.
It is also your compliance document
In a number of states, some version of this page is what you file or what you show. The forms do not use the phrase “scope and sequence”, but they ask for the same content: an outline of the curriculum, the subjects covered, evidence of instruction.
- Pennsylvania and New York both want an outline of planned instruction up front, which is the scope column and nothing more.
- Massachusetts asks for approval before you start, and a subject list with materials is the substance of what gets approved.
- States with portfolio review, including Maryland and Virginia, are asking the evidence column to have been true.

The practical consequence: if you write the plan with standard codes in it, the compliance paperwork is a formatting exercise rather than a research project. A lesson that carries the code it was built from is the artifact the reviewer is trying to establish exists, which is also why printable packs are worth keeping from subjects that otherwise leave no paper.
The honest summary
Scope is a list you can copy for free from a published standards set. Sequence is five or six prerequisites, not thirty weeks. Everything else in a commercial scope and sequence is an answer to constraints that belong to a school building.
Build it as one page per subject with five columns, leave the dates out, write the evidence column before you teach rather than after, and use one rule when it goes sideways: finish the thread, not the week. Then the plan survives contact with a real child, which is the only test that matters.
